Moderate and Ensure Good Progress in Writing: Practical Strategies for Classroom Impact

This training is aimed at primary English leaders and class teachers, providing practical skills to improve your school’s writing provision and guidance on using SLN’s writing assessment resources.

This course is designed to help you review and strengthen your school’s writing provision, with a clear focus on ensuring good progress for all learners. Using the Simple View of Writing as a guiding framework, we will explore the key components of effective writing and how they interconnect to support development.

You’ll gain hands-on, actionable approaches that can be applied immediately in the classroom, alongside strategies for using the SLN’s writing assessment resources to track and accelerate progress.

Key areas we’ll cover include:

  • Transcription skills: handwriting and spelling
  • Composition skills: idea generation, vocabulary choices, grammar, punctuation
  • Meta-cognitive strategies: planning, editing, and self-monitoring
  • Implications for whole-school practice: how to embed these approaches effectively

By the end of the session, you’ll leave with practical tools, assessment insights, and classroom-ready strategies to help every child make measurable progress in writing.

This training is delivered via Zoom and the materials referenced will be available digitally.
